Meet Jonny
A neighbor, organizer, and advocate for working families.
Jonny Antonio Bishop is a teacher, union leader, and community activist shaped by his working-class upbringing in a family with deep roots in both Mexico and the Chicago area. His mother immigrated from Mexico, and his father was born and raised in and around Chicago, giving him a unique perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing immigrant and working-class families. Surrounded by the challenges of community hardships, he chose a path of public service and returned to his former high school, Palatine High School, to teach U.S. History in English and Spanish while sponsoring programs that support Latino students. Having worked in some of the wealthiest and least-funded schools in Illinois, he witnessed deep inequities and dedicated himself to giving students greater opportunities through coaching, starting clubs, developing curriculum, and consistently advocating for their needs.
Jonny has also served as an elected executive and local delegate for large local teacher unions that are part of the IFT-AFT, representing thousands of educators and advocating for fair representation and better working conditions. His experiences in the classroom, in his community, and within his own family have shaped his commitment to public service and to ensuring that everyday people have a voice in government.
